Personal Interaction?

What is it with people these days? It seems everywhere I go, groups of people who seem to be together, are not interacting at all. All they appear to do is text and read and laugh at their phones instead of with each other.  And it’s not just teens and people in their 20’s. I see mature adults doing it too! Am I the only one who’s worried about this?

Dear Concerned:

The other day I was playing basketball at a local playground and I saw five teenagers hanging around at a picnic table. All five of them were sitting there, (ignoring each other) just pecking away on their tiny little texting devices.

I’ve seen it with adults too. A few weeks ago I observed a husband and wife having dinner together at a restaurant. Their noses were buried in their smartphones for the entire meal. They barely spoke a word to one another.

Because of advances in technology, people are becoming withdrawn… and relationships are suffering. Relationships between spouses. Relationships between parents and their children. Relationships between friends. Relationships between… you name it!

Before you know it, people are going to become total “shut-ins.” People are going to start conducting the majority of their lives through these mechanical little gadgets.

It’s pretty sad.

What can we do about this “dumbing down of society” as I call it? We can pray. Pray hard. Pray that whatever people are hypnotized by on their smartphones… that it’s something that’s good for them. Something that’s constructive. Something that’s hopefully making the world a better place. Something that’s drawing them toward having a close, personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Something like maybe… oh I don’t know… maybe a website like www.KeepGodInTheNews.com.

A website that could use a few million “likes”… “friends”… “shares”… and perhaps… even donations… so we can turn the tide and start transforming these reclusive “shut-ins” into the fun-loving, sociable, caring, sharing, people God intended us to be.
